What do I need to bring to the DMV for a learner’s permit?
Bring proof of identity and, if you have never had a California licence or ID, proof of California residency, and be ready to pay the application fee. Start the application on dmv.ca.gov before you go. The DMV’s own document lists are the ones to follow, so check them the week of your visit.
Before you go
Fill in the driver licence application online on dmv.ca.gov, then book an appointment at a DMV office. Starting online shortens the visit.
The documents
Proof of identity — an original or a certified copy from the DMV’s list of acceptable documents.
Proof of California residency, if you have never held a California licence or ID. A REAL ID asks for more, so decide whether you want one before you gather papers.
Your social security number, where it applies to you. The DMV’s lists say which documents count; turning up one short is the most common reason a visit is wasted.
If you are under eighteen
Applicants under eighteen also need proof of driver education and a parent or guardian’s signature on the application. The age rules and exceptions are on dmv.ca.gov.
At the office
You pay the fee, pass a vision test, have your photo taken, and take the knowledge test. The DMV does not start knowledge tests late in the day, so book a morning or early afternoon slot.
Quick answers
Do I need an appointment?
The DMV’s permit instructions say to book one. Do it on dmv.ca.gov; busy offices can be booked weeks ahead.
Can I take the knowledge test on the same visit?
Yes. The knowledge test is part of the permit visit, after the vision test and photo.
