Can I take the California DMV test in my own language?
Very likely, yes. The California DMV publishes the Driver Handbook in Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Armenian, Hindi, Punjabi and Chinese as well as English, and offers the knowledge test in a number of languages. Which languages the test is given in, and in what form, is the DMV’s decision — confirm on dmv.ca.gov before you book.
The handbook comes first
Every question on the knowledge test is drawn from the California Driver Handbook. The DMV publishes it free on dmv.ca.gov, and the translated editions carry the same rules as the English one.
So whatever language you take the test in, the handbook in your language is the place to start.
Checking which languages the test is offered in
The DMV sets the test languages and can change them. Check dmv.ca.gov before you book, and ask at the office when you arrive — the staff can tell you what is available there.
Studying in two languages
Road signs and the words painted on the road are in English, wherever you take the test. People who study in their own language usually do best when they also learn the English terms for the things they will see on the road.
DMV Prep is built for that. The whole app — handbook, questions and explanations — switches between English, Spanish, Armenian and Russian at any moment, so you can read a rule in one language and check the English wording in the other.
Quick answers
Is the translated handbook the same as the English one?
It carries the same rules. The DMV publishes both; check dmv.ca.gov for the current editions.
Are the road signs translated?
No. Signs on California roads are in English, so learn their shapes and colours, and the English words they carry, whatever language you study in.
Can I study in my language and take the test in English?
Yes. Many people do exactly that, which is why it helps to learn the English terms alongside your own.
